Delay in Rings

16 May 2008 158 views 3 Comments

I was at Tiffany’s yesterday to order my ring. The salesman had ordered three rings for me. One was too big, about a 1.13 carat. I really looked like a WAG with it. The .88 was perfect and although it was over my fiance’s budget, he told me to get whatever makes me happy. THENNNNN they told me the bad news - that it would take over 2 months to get the ring for me as resizing was not possible. My finger is too small and with the diamonds on the side, there would be a danger when they resize it. So they would have to send the ring back to Tiffany’s in America and have a new ring altogether, taking about 2 months in the process. I was really disappointed as my mum said I should come home with the ring and we were planning to visit India in July.

So I went online and looked for alternatives. A lot of people were discussing Dubai as a cheap and efficient alternative. Basically, you can choose your own design or have them copy your design and make a ring within 3-4 days for a bargain price. One woman had a Cartier bracelet made for 900 pounds and when she had it revalued here in the UK for insurance purposes, she received a quote that it was worth more than 4,000 pounds!

I also have a friend at law school whose father is a diamond trader. I felt a bit embarrased to ask her if her father sells ring or only does whole sale. My friend was so helpful and connected me to her sister who is in the same business. She was able to reassure me that they would be able to make a similar ring to the Tiffany novo and that I would have more flexibility in choosing the stones according to the price. Im hoping to get a bargain as the prices in India are much better than overpriced UK! Heres to my perfect ring!

What size finger do you have? My husband proposed to me with a size 5 Tiffany Novo last summer and I wear a size 4. They were able to resize it down to a 4.5 and then eventually to a 4. They did have to send the ring to NYC for sizing and it did take about a week to get it back to my home Tiffany’s store.

My husband (fiancee at the time) went into Tiffany’s last January and I wanted to get the classic setting…but once I saw the Novo..it was all over! I fell in love with the Novo the moment I saw it. I definitely think you should keep Tiffany a contender because whenever I looked elsewhere - I always wanted the Tiffany. :) Good luck finding the right ring for you! You will be wearing it forever, you know! :)

    Hi Heather,

My ring size is 4, the same as yours. I live in the UK so unfortunately, it takes more than week to send it to New York for me. They said it takes up to 2 months because of the customs clearance and paperwork transporting the diamond back and forth.

Yes, I’ve definately set my heart on the Novo. I thought the Legacy ring would look great but when I tried it on, it made me look about 50 years older because its too grand for my puny fingers. I might get the Novo at the Tiffany’s store in Dubai as the diamonds are cheaper there and you can bargain. Or I could get something very similar.

What size diamond did you finally buy? I really want one around 1 carat but my fiance think it would look too big on my finger.
