Diamonds in Dubai vs Diamonds in India
So I’ve been corresponding with Kiran from Cara Jewellers in Dubai and my friend’s sister in Mumbai about diamonds. I’ve decided to offer all the options to my fiance and let him decide if he still wants to put the order in for the Tiffany Novo ring or to design one on our own.
Kiran has been really helpful, even sent me a picture of two diamonds he could keep aside for me – a 1.03 carat and a 1.07 carat diamond. Since they are sealed by the International Gemological Institute in tamper proof packages, he said he would open them in front of me and mount it on the ring. The quotes he gave me were about 2,750 pounds to 3,250 pounds for these rings. I’ve read on other blogs that you can knock off about 40% off that price because the market is very competitive in Dubai and hagling is more than accepted, its actually expected. My friend’s sister in India gave me a quote about $4,000 to $5,000 which roughly translates into 2,000- 2,500 pounds but I think her quote was only based on the centre stone being .88 carat. She also added ‘Every friday ‘rapport’ releases a new diamond price list for all shapes, based on colour and clarity. At the moment the diamond market is not very steady as we are seeing drastic prices changes every week.”
Im still quite suspicious about buying a diamond in the Middle East as I dont know anyone personally who has done so…. I’ve only been reading other people’s experiences on blog but it could actually be these very jewelers online (highly unlikely but very possible) I wanted to create this blog so that everyday readers could actually learn from my mistakes or pick up tips through my own experiences. I’ve read one suggestion to get the ring, after its made, valued at a lab there but it would take a few days. I think most people keep the receipt and then get the ring valued at Hatton Gardens upon their return.
Hmmm…..

My husband is in Dubai for business. I researched CARA online, and am taking my chances on a replica of Tiffany’s ETOILE ring to go with my solitaire ring. The price quoted (425Canadian) is very reasonable set in 18k white gold, not platinum.
The NOVO ring is one of my favourites. I saw it after purchasing a round brilliant cut diamond. The price for the NOVO in Hawaii was extremely high, $62 000! Okay, it was just over 2 carats, however it was no wonder that I fell in love with it.
Keep us posted as to what you decide. I am having a similar dilemma as I will be in Hong Kong this month and a friend from work just purchased (2) 1 carat diamonds, D colour, VSI, Excellent cut for $6500.00 for both. That is a fabulous deal. So, I will post what I find there.
Hi Clare,
Thanks for your note. Yes, the Novo ring is absolutely beautiful and I’ve set my heart on it. Um, 2 carats would fall off my finger as my fingers are really small. I dont want to end up looking like a footballer’s wife.
Wow, I didnt realise that diamonds in Hong Kong were that cheap. Do you mean Canadian dollars, US dollars or Hong Kong Dollars? I heard that diamonds in Thailand are also quite cheap. I guess the lesson learnt is not to buy diamonds in the UK or the US. Anywhere else will prove cheaper…
Look forward to hearing more from you.
I have bought from Cara and from other Jewellers in the Gold and Diamond Park, one of the ones I got last year I haggled down form £7000 to just over £1500 it is a 1.75 square diamond with Piazza shoulders, I have had it valued at £6500, wanted a bargain… got one.. and now found that they want £26.00 per month to insure it because I would be wearing it out. I would definitly recommend, my sister is going out next month to go to Cara as she saw one a couple of months ago and she is going back to get it….. genuine tourist who loves diamonds and a bargain.. Ps Chelsea footballer sat beside me when I was last there so great for celebrity watching as well
Wow! Thanks for the confirmation and what a bargain! Congratulations you must be so pleased with your ring. Sigh – cant wait for mine!
Leave the credit card at home… one doesnt always look as much as a bargain as 2.. 3… or matching earrings and necklace, go and enjoy looking and spending it will be worth it..
Of course, Dubai is cheap for buying diamonds. You can go to a Gentleman called Mr. Jay. He supplies diamonds to the local jewellers. So he can give you extremely cheape rates. You can contact him at contactjayparekh@yahoo.com
