Saris for Bridesmaids
Have you seen Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) on the new Vogue India cover? Shes in a sari, the Indian national costume and looks very elegant! She even said “I’ve never played it safe with my image”
I’ve been thinking of saris for bridesmaids the last few weeks. One of my bridesmaids is a Tamil Sri Lankan and they also wear the saris, but just in a different style. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think they wear it with the back embroidery up front.
I had the crazy idea of getting four different bridesmaids costumes to reflect the different cultures of my fiance, my own and that of my bridesmaids. One could wear an English/western dress, one could wear the chinese costume, one could wear an Indian sari and the last one could wear a Pakistani salwar. I called my Pakistani bridesmaid and she suggested that I send each bridesmaid a sample colour scheme or sample cloth with the colour of dress they should match up with. I thought it was very sweet but I told her that the bride is supposed to pay for the bridesmaids dresses. I think the idea of trying to find four different dresses in the same colour would be a bit too stressful. I want the maid of honour to wear a different coloured dress but she doesnt want to stand out and look favoured. What a sweetie eh?
Anyways, back to Posh Spice, this photo has really got me thinking of getting my bridesmaids to wear Indian saris. I could buy four of the same saris the next time I am in India or get my parents to buy it for me from there. Since one of the bridesmaids knows how to wear one, she could help dress the others. I can almost imagine the getting ready pictures would look amazing. I also think that my bridesmaids could wear the saris in the future if they attend an Indian wedding or fancy dress party as an Indian princess (te hehe)
The only problem I foresee is the blouse which is usually made to measure. Perhaps I could get their sizes and make them in India. Or just ask them to find another top to wear it with. I can imagine some of them may be uncomfortable with showing off the midriff area.
Here are some photos to inspire other brides who may be thinking of saris for bridesmaids. I think its a lovely elegant dress (provided you put a good brooch or safety pin) and can reflect my Indian upbringing and one of my bridesmaid’s culture really nicely….
Isnt this lovely?
Um, not that colour co-ordinated. But atleast you learn a lesson to buy all the saris in one go.
Ah cant wait for my bridesmaids to look as elegant as Liz Hurley in a sari.
And finally, this is how a sari looks when you buy them at the store:

These are the comments by my bridesmaids:
“i read your note and I love the sari idea and the tibetan dress idea so am not gonna be any help in that area. When it comes down to it, it is all about what you want. Just tell us and we will do it.”
“i think sari’s are a lovely idea! and like you mentioned, it will be something unique. It sounds better that each bridesmaid isn’t wearing her national dress- and that all bridesmaids arent indian. so wearing the sari would in fact represent the indian culture being embraced by non indians (sorry for going too much into the philosophy of it- hehehe).
i wouldn’t mind wearing a sari- the mid riff bit wouldnt bother me because it hardly shows when the sari is draped. but it has to be a good color sari- and maybe same design in different colors. Or different styled blouses in the same color sari’s. Or different patterns in the same color- just so they dont look like a uniform. hehehe
but then again, im alright with the tibetan dress too.
but i can imagine getting the blouse stitched would be quite a task!especially because its supposed to be form fitting- cant be loose or baggy. the measurements would be difficult- and there are no standard sizes that can guide you (e.g uk size 8 or 10 or 12). “
