Crazy Weddings
During the civil ceremony at our wedding, the Registrar told me that some people turned up in fancy dress the other day when they got married. At the time, I laughed and thought that something so sacred like a wedding should not be taken so lightly. But now the more I think about it, the more I think its actually quite different and atleast its memorable to all the guests. Here are two movie fanatics – Im glad they found partners that understand their passion….
Star Wars fans Duncan Thomson and Sammi Gardiner wed on a very special day “May the Fourth” for their Star Wars themed wedding. The day was specially chosen for the famed phrase: ‘May the 4th be with you’ in tribute to the most famous line in the film. They even asked all 50 guests to come in cult sci-fi costume. The groom and bride dressed as Han Solo and Princess Leia. The couple’s friend Dan Cawpheray delivered readings as chief villain Darth Vader in the style of the Star Wars scripts, guarded by two Imperial Stormtroopers. Dan addressed the congregation with a speech inspired by the moment in The Empire Strikes Back when Darth tells Luke Skywalker: ‘I am your father’.
The guests were told: ‘Members of the Galactic Empire, Duncan and Sammi met a long time ago, in a place far, far away. The force is strong with these two. If you do not underestimate the power of marriage then together you can rule your house as husband and wife.’
Duncan and Sammi exchanged their own unique vows, using their favourite moments from Lucas’s timeless movies. Humourously, one of Duncan’s vows to Sammi said: ‘I promise to protect you from carbon freezing and promise to protect you from the Dark Side, through hyperspace and into the far reaches of the galaxy.’
The couple had even gone as far as inviting cast members of the movie such as Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and director George Lucas. It has been reported that George Lucas sent back a RSVP letter with his Skywalker Ranch stamp saying he could not make it.
On to other fancy dress wedding news, a couple from Barnstable, Devon (another crazy English wedding!!) married on 25th April 2009 in Shrek style – literally spending three hours in make up to look like this:
Hospice nurse Christine England married her fiance Keith Green in front of 100 guests who were also in fancy dress. The bride confessed “The idea just came to me. I knew what we would go as because Keith looks just like Shrek.” Um, I dont think that should be a compliment!! Christine tried to (unsucessfully) convince her 18 year old son to dress as a donkey.
Christine’s mother Annette England said: ‘It’s not necessarily how you imagine seeing your daughter get married but it was great fun.’
I once saw a post on a wedding forum asking for creative ways to keep the guests entertained. One bride suggested fancy dress costumes which guests posed with. If you think these weddings were a bit too fanatical, then this fancy dress box is a great suggestion. With all the alcohol at weddings, I am sure guests would indulge in a bit of Halloween-eque behaviour!
