Cupcake course

As you may or may not have realised, Im quite the cupcake fanatic and my friends even think my cupcake obsession is quite funny (and they enjoy being the recipients of all my cupcake experiments even more). So I decided to enroll in a proper cupcake making course. I signed up for the Cakes4fun cupcake course in Putney. They have a range of classes – from decorating cakes to all sorts of cupcake decorations. The wedding cupcake course costs £99 and the normal cupcake course costs £75. By now, Im not suprised that anything connected to weddings cost so much more!!

They didnt teach us how to make the cupcake base but they did give a recipe. I tried the recipe today and found that the cupcakes rose instead of staying flat. Im not sure if its the way I did it or that the recipe was incorrect.

and then when baked, they come out perfectly flat:

Anyways, the instructor Jenny was absolutely fabulous and really encouraging. She taught us how to make three types of cupcake decorations – one with the butter cream, one with the fondant icing and one with the teddy bear cupcakes.

First she taught us how to make the butterflies with sugar paste. They provide glitter and another decoration that gives the matt effect. One tip that I learnt from the neighbouring cupcake maker was to use a different colour glitter to the sugar paste so that it really stands out (e.g pink glitter on a yellow sugar paste butterfly) It sounds like it clashes really bad but it actually looks great. These are the daisy sugar paste moulds we made:

These are the butterflies sugar paste moulds, we put them on a piece of cardboard that is V shaped so that it stands out:

The hard work involved to make one little butterfly, which someone will probably gobble up in one second:

I think the Teddies would be lovely as wedding favours for little ones at the wedding. One mother said that if someone asked you if you made them, you could smile smugly. And who thought weddings were places brides showed off? :P
