Inspiration from the White House

Last month Barack Obama welcomed the Indian prime minister on the first state reception of his presidency. But, as a wedding enthusiast, my eyes were on the lovely Michelle Obama: what she would wear, and the reception she would throw…. and she did not disappoint!

Michelle Obama wore a strapless, gold and cream-coloured sheath dress with an overlay of silver and matching shawl that was designed by Indian designer Naeem Khan and made in India. It resembled the churidhar (or shawl) or the Indian salwar-keemeez! Michelle could have even looked like a bride.

Earlier during the day, Michelle wore a skirt designed by Rachel Roy, another Indian. She pulled off the smart-casual look so well that I wish I could replicate it at work.

A marquee was set up in the south lawn of the White House:

and the table decor is just divine. Brides could copy having the menu printed in a fancy font and for guests to have a sneak peak. You know I just love the green theme (as evidenced by my own wedding! :

Three hundred thirty three guests (including the infamous gatecrashers the Salahis) were said to have been treated to green prawn curry and lentil soup with cheese.

And they were also treated to some fine Indian entertainment:
